Open Call CULT: Modena x Karlsruhe

As part of its activities as a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts, Karlsruhe has initiated a project with the media arts city of Modena (Italy). The EU-funded project CULT. Dialogue and exchange of citizens on cultural heritage and media arts as tool for the creation of a stronger European identity promotes the exchange of artistic and urban perspectives. The project aims to foster intercultural exchange and dialogue between citizens of the two media arts cities, to reflect on our shared cultural heritage and to use media art as a creative tool for strengthening a European identity. The Kinemathek is delighted to be part of the project.

EXPECT_art: Researching and teaching cultural competence through art

EXPECT_art is a European research project promoting cultural competence through arts education. It is guided by a community-based research design that includes arts-based methods and directly involves children, teachers and citizens as research partners.

LICHTSPIEL – Network for cultural film education

LICHTSPIEL, the newly founded network for cultural film education, brings together film institutions, cinematheques, festivals, cinemas, filmmakers and film educators. As leading experts in cultural film education we have long stood for a comprehensive, innovative and multi-perspective approach beyond commercial interests. Our way of working is collaborative and decentralised, participatory and internationally oriented — in practice as well as in theoretical discourse. Above all, our wide range of offers, projects and initiatives builds lasting relationships between young audiences, the art of film and the cinema as a cultural space.

DOPPELBELICHTUNG – A taste for cinema

We are a group of people with very different backgrounds and interests. What connects us all — each in our own way — is the medium of film, the cinema, and the wish to talk about it.

Our idea for doing so is the DOPPELBELICHTUNG (double exposure). This unique way of presenting films creates new connections, sparks discussion and opens up fascinating occasions for conversation. With our film events we want to create a space for encounters.

More than cinema – education offers

To us, cinema is more than moving images on a screen. It is a living language, an art form that tells stories, stirs emotions, provokes thought and creates community.
Our educational work is based on the concept of sustainable cultural education. The brochure is available at our cinema.

Conversations about film education

We have held personal conversations about film education with people whose perspectives and experience we are curious about. They work in film education and film literacy in a variety of contexts, introduce themselves, and shed light on aspects of the subject across a broad span of time.

QUARTIERSKINO

7 neighbourhoods, 7 films, 7 great live shows

The Quartierskino project took place in 2021 and 2023. Together with representatives from a Karlsruhe neighbourhood, films were selected to illuminate the district and highlight its character. The films were then shown at our cinema. As a special feature, each selected neighbourhood got a live show with a film talk, streamed on YouTube and open to a live audience at the cinema.

Quartierskino was funded by the "Kultur nach Corona" impulse programme of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
We were also kindly supported by Volkswohnung GmbH Karlsruhe.

NACHKLANG – Film talks from the auditorium

With this handmade series we became producers ourselves: conversations with Kinemathek staff, association members and subscribers of Kinemathek+, our former streaming portal, about the films showing there at the time.

How much diversity does Karlsruhe need to make cultural participation possible for everyone? How do we preserve the diversity of our cultural landscape?
Over a day and a half we exchanged ideas and worked with representatives of Karlsruhe's cultural institutions, cultural practitioners and citizens active in the cultural scene on what it takes to keep offering a diverse cultural programme that enables cultural participation for EVERYONE.

KLANGKUNST IM KINO – Collaboration with Media Art Sound at the HfG Karlsruhe

For several years the Kinemathek Karlsruhe has been organising concerts, exhibitions and workshops in the field of experimental sound and media art together with Lorenz Schwarz and Dr. Paul Modler from the Media Art Sound department of the HfG Karlsruhe. These include the Roundabout final concerts, exhibitions, and concert and workshop series. The programme presents audiovisual performances, live electronics, multi-channel sound and robotic sound objects by students and international guests.
